It also plays an important role in bone health.

Exposure to sunlight helps in the release of the hormone- serotonin. Serotonin boosts mood and makes a person calm and focused. Lower levels of serotonin may lead to depression.

Specific cancers are caused due to fewer daylight hours such as colon cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, ovarian cancer and pancreatic cancer. Dermatologists recommend UV radiation exposure to treat certain skin condition like psoriasis, eczema, jaundice, acne, etc.

It is advised to expose in the sunlight daily for at least 10-15 minutes. Midday is the best time to get sunlight as the sun is at its peak and UVB rays are most intense. In less time you could have sufficient Vitamin-D. But prolonged exposure in midday sun may increase the risk of dangerous skin cancers.

Melanin pigment determines the colour of your skin. It acts as a natural sunscreen and protects skin against damage from excess sunlight. Therefore darker-skinned people need to spend longer in the sun than lighter skinned people to produce the same amount of Vitamin-D.

Dermatologists recommend covering up sunscreen and protective clothing, if you going to be in the sun for a longer time. This guard against skin cancer and diseases.

Sunlight also boosts your immune system by energizing the T-cells which are the key immune cells. The sunlight activates them and increases their movement which gets them to the infection site and causes the response. The blue light in the sun’s rays make T cells move faster.
